E-BUSINESS PRINT MAGAZINES

Free Subscriptions: Who says the best things in life aren't free? These publications belie that fact, as they are excellent and an easy read, something of note to us busy e-commerce executives, eh?

  • "iMarketing News" at http://www.imarketingnews.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi (from the publishers of DMNews). Get a free subscription at http://www.imarketingnews.com/html/subscribe.html. I read every issue cover to cover! The editor, Ken Magill, keeps it always down-to-earth and practical, something missing in general in many other Internet-related publications, and businesses, for that matter. Each issue features a rotating special focus like e-Mail Marketing or other topic that gives it focus and depth. Ken, keep up the great work!
Fee-based Subscriptions: Most of these print magazines or papers all have online versions as well (except the Advisor series), but you miss out on the graphics, so I recommend that you get the printed version.
  • "E-Business Advisor", (http://www.advisor.com/wHome.nsf/pub/meb with some related content at www.advisor.com), focuses on "technology strategies for business innovators" and focuses on innovations, strategies and practices. Although it can be pretty technical, everything in it is written by other experts in the field. For intermediate to expert web folks only. I read this cover to cover as well.
    • Subscribe at http://www.advisorstore.com/prinpub1.html (It is free to members of the International Webmasters' Association at  http://www.iwanet.org.)  Quoting the publishers: "e-BUSINESS ADVISOR Magazine gives you expert advice to plan, implement and manage the full range of e-business enterprise solutions. You learn: important trends, new research, strategic analysis, e-commerce ideas, marketing strategies, legal protection, rentable online solutions (ASP), enterprise application integration, supply chain (SCM) and customer relationship (CRM) strategies, team collaboration, wireless communications, portable & remote computing, sales/service/field force automation, web site management, web application development, key technologies (Java, XML, EDI, databases, networking, security), and more."
  • "Business Security Advisor" (http://www.advisor.com/wHome.nsf/pub/mis ) , by the same publishers as e-Business Advisor, focuses on total business data and web security issues with the same detailed insider advice as in "e-Business Advisor".
  • "Business 2.0" at www.business2.com. I actually prefer this to Fast Company, due to its usually heavier web-related content, but they're both superb. It's worth subscribing to the paper version for all the graphics that are included that illustrate difficult concepts. The best graphic I've ever seen to illustrate the "ideal e-tail mall" with the customer-system interaction was in their printed January 1999 edition.
  • "The Industry Standard", http://www.thestandard.net/, an excellent news magazine of the digital community, it covers the internet economy, including news, quantitative analysis of industry metrics, recruiting, and new products and services. The graphs and trends are superb.

E-BUSINESS BOOKS

  • "Web Marketing Applied" by Joe Tracy. By this time, you have some sort of web site in place and need to market it. But if you're like me, you barely have the time to read an e-newsletter, forget long tomes of ponderous text. Never fear, Joe's book gives 101 Marketing Ideas in one of the easiest formats to understand and apply that I've ever read, ranking marketing ideas on their cost and effectiveness, and using concise text to convey the essence of the topic. Way to go, Joe!  Buy web Marketing Applied now from Amazon.com!
  • "E-Business: Roadmap for Success", by Ravi Kalakota, Marcia Robinson and Don Tapscott,  epitomizes my preferred e-business blueprint methodology for merging "business processes, enterprise applications and organizational structure necessary to create a high-performance business." Each chapter clearly outlines the strategies to follow and is full of useful diagrams and checklists to incorporate (with proper citation, of course! :-) into presentations. I highly recommend it. The chapter on eCRM is particularly useful as is the one on e-business infrastructure.  Buy eBusiness Roadmap now from Amazon.com!
  • "The Cluetrain Manifesto: The End of Business as Usual", by Christopher Locke, Rick Levine, Doc Searls and David Weinberger. The preface clearly states that this will be unlike any business book you have ever read, and I fully agree (thank goodness)! It gives a wake-up call to those who still "haven't got a clue" that the Internet revolution has just begun and what earth shattering changes are still to follow for companies and managers who refuse to face it, let alone "get it". (They can see the origins of the book at  "The Cluetrain Manifesto" web site). A real thought-provoking list of "in-your-face" e-business truisms that will shake the foundations of those who were hoping the web "would just die down and go away." and help those who don't to "get it".  The book will make you laugh and wring your hands in despair over the reluctance of many companies to participate in this new global "conversation" between customers, employees and trading partners that is and will be the new Internet marketplace, before making you gear up to carry on the fight.  Buy Cluetrain now from Amazon.com!

You can still participate by being a signatory of the Manifesto by going to the web site that kicked it all off, "The Cluetrain Manifesto" web site and read rallying calls from others who "caught the [clue]train.".

  • Permission Marketing: Turning Strangers into Friends, and Friends into Customers by Seth Godin and Don Peppers. Seth Godin of Yahoo! and creator of Yoyodyne, like me, is an absolute fanatic about getting the customer's advance permission to market to him or her-  a must in this excessive advertising world and one click away ease of turning it all off on the web. Why show new car ads to someone who's just bought a new car? You annoy him and waste your money. Why not target people who've already told you explicitly (in their profile or a form, call or letter) or implicitly by what they're looking at that they're shopping for a new car? As Seth says, "By talking only to volunteers, Permission Marketing guarantees that consumers pay more attention to the marketing message. It serves both customers and marketers in a symbiotic exchange." Buy Permission Marketing now from Amazon.com!
  • Essential Business Tactics for the Net, by Larry Chase. Larry Chase, author of a great e-marketing newsletter, Larry Chase's Web Digest for Marketers, gives small and large businesses the know-how they need to do business on the Net profitably. The book is divided into two parts: one for using the Net within your business and the other for marketing it on the Net. Chase shows you how to reduce costs and increase profits with instructions on how to:
    • integrate the Net into your business, reduce overhead (sending faxes over the Net to distributing documents by e-mail),  recruit employees, anonymously gather corporate intelligence on your competitors, bring your business to the Web, market your business via the Web, provide sales support, carry out public relations, sell retail, do promotions, and more.   Buy Essential Business Tactics now from Amazon.com!
  • "Net Worth: Shaping Markets When Customers Make the Rules", by John Hagel and Marc Singer. While only focusing on "the challenges and opportunities of developing an infomediary business", it is still helpful for others in e-commerce to help you understand how the customer is truly king in the web world. Buy Net Worth now from Amazon.com!
  • FREE "E-tailing Guide" by E-Tailing Group (at www.e-tailing.com). Gives the best list of back-office and corporate strategy questions and issues I've seen that must be answered before designing a full, corporate e-commerce site and business. You have to order this free guide from their site at http://www.e-tailing.com/etgc000u.htm.
  • "CUSTOMERS.COM" by Patricia Seybold. This is a good novice's book which I recommend cautiously. However, I especially recommend that you order the free Customers.Com handbook available on her site at http://www.customers.com, which is short enough that busy executives actually may have time to read it. (Watch out for the few significant over-simplifications, though, so quote carefully. For example, I am most major e-business senior managers highly disagree that you can run a major corporate web business with a couple of people, at least, you can't run it well. Typical full e-commerce sites have a minimum of 25 people, usually up to 50 to 80, depending on the size and scope of the business!) Buy iCustomers.com now from Amazon.com!

GENERAL MANAGEMENT & PERSONAL GROWTH BOOKS

To become the best manager, consultant or employee, one must understand human nature... and oneself. Here are a number of excellent books for management and personal growth.

Personal Growth:
