E-BUSINESS EVENTS, CONFERENCES & TRAINING TOPICS

E-BUSINESS AND E-TAILING SEMINARS AND CONFERENCES

Master List of E-conferences:

Web Marketing Conferences:

  • Direct Marketing Association:

The DMA offers many online and offline marketing conferences, seminars and councils. See the entire list at the DMA's Events page.

    • The best of the DMA's events for networking and general marketing expertise continues to be the Annual DMA Conference (read about it at http://www.the-dma.org/dmaannual/index.htm). There are now many more Internet-related topics than it used to have. I still find many of the seminars usually for beginners or some thinly-veiled marketing pitches for the companies, but with careful selection, it can be invaluable. Use it to learn about topics outside your area as well. Note that the roundtables and side conversations with other experts, and particularly the business networking, make this worth it. Plus it still has some of the few great freebie events going on during the week. Usually held around Halloween, it always has intense pre-conference workshops on specific topics, including in 2001 business-to-business marketing, catalog marketing, marketing creativity and global direct marketing.
    • Net.Marketing Conference and Exposition (read about it at http://www.the-dma.org/dmanetmarketing/index.shtml) A specific web-related marketing conference with many big-name speakers. Attendees tend to be middle to beginning range.
    • DMA Interactive Marketing Council and Web seminars. See the DMA site, www.the-dma.org, for details.
    • Association for Interactive Media, AIM, www.interactivehq.org, is now a part of the DMA, and offers seminars as well, including events at the Fall Net.Marketing Conference.

Note: DMA/ AIM offers a free subsciption e-mail to notify you of upcoming DMA/AIM events and changes to the site. To subscribe to the MyDMA newsletter, go to  http://www.the-dma.org/aboutdma/mydmanewsletter.shtml.

  • Worldwide Business Research Group at http://www.wbresearch.com/ sponsors international logistics and e-tailing conferences, including E-Tail '99.
  • Institute for International Research at www.iir-ny.com, offers many web marketing seminars, including multicultural and e-tail specific themes. (Beware, once your name is on their list, you will get mail forever! :-)

E-Tailing and E-commerce Conferences:

Web Management, Leadership and Latest Trends Conferences:

  • Fast Company's Conference, Real Time, at www.fastcompany.com/realtime, is considered to be fantastic personal development for "fast thinkers". Per a colleague who attended: "The speakers were excellent, although the other attendees tended to be more junior level." Watch out for future "brain jolt" events from them. These sell out VERY FAST.
  • Jupiter Communication's web conferences are usually pretty good. See their list at http://www.jup.com/events/forums/. Includes many specialty topics like kids, music industry, financial services, online advertising, and a special Executive Series. Their Executive Forum, MindShare, is  in June, and is invitation only, although you pay. Request your invite no later than the end of March at http://www.jup.com/events/forums/executive/fast_fact.html.

General Web Conferences:

  • ThunderLizard Productions at http://www.thunderlizard.com offers seminars where all attendees attend the same track.
    • Web Marketing and Web Advertising Seminars
    • Web Design and other technical web seminars on Photoshop, QuarkExpress, JavaScript
  • Faulkner & Gray Publications (www.faulknergray.com), which include Internet Retailer, Electronic Commerce World, DM Review and Financial Service ONLINE, offers web retailing and online brand building events as well, including the upcoming   Internet Retailer World '99, October 5-6 in Orlando, Florida. See more info at http://www.faulknergray.com/confer/irc/index.htm.
  • Internet World: See http://events.internet.com .Supposed to be the BIG Internet conference, but colleagues who have attended it in the past gave it a thumbs down. So buyers beware! It is offered several times a year, and all over the world. They tend to focus more on technology than business, however, so marketers and business strategists might want to look at other conferences and training in addition. If it's offered in your town, you may want to go to the free vendor exhibit hall just to catch up on technology, and avoid paying for the sessions.
  • CTIEXPO, which covers Computer and Internet Telephony Integration, is useful for call centers wishing to provide better service to online customers.

Federal Web Conferences:

You don't need to make a special visit for any of these conferences unless you're in government or work with government clients, but if you're in DC....

  • FedWeb Conference for federal webbies and contractors at www.fedweb.org. A small conference for locals.
  • FOSE (Federal Office Systems Expo) at www.fose.com is mostly hardware and software, but they have added conference sessions. It is the largest Information Technology show in Washington, DC, with some web info.
  • E-Gov (Electronic Government) Conference at www.e-gov.com is not just for federal people, but covers far-reaching topics including security, regulation, and public service web sites and best practices. Unfortunately, the last edition was not a very well organized conference and the speakers I heard were well-meaning federal workers with limited Internet knowledge. Did anyone else have a better experience?

E-BUSINESS AND WEB MARKETING CERTIFICATION AND COURSES

  • Novell offers Internet Professional certificate programs: Internet Business Strategist, Web Designer, Web Developer, Intranet Manager and Internet Architect. Visit http://www.netboss.com for information. Note that you can also study on your own and just take the test! Call 800-RED-EXAM for test registration information.
  • LearningTree International: They have week-long courses with exams that give actual credit hours if you pass. I found them repetitive, though, so you may want to check out their CD-ROM courses which also give accreditation, particularly if more than one member of your web team needs to take them.
  • International Webmasters Association's list of web Training and Education resources can be found at http://www.webprofession.com/wtec/. You must be a member to get the list, however, although conferences are also listed.
